What do we understand by communication in the light of most recent scientific, artistic and technological research? How is the world of communication evolving and where is it leading? What is the function of communication in the origin and evolution of life? The concept of communication is not so much a noun as a verb: the action of communicating is a dynamic force intrinsic to life itself. All organisms process and exchange information. They communicate. Nowadays, it is indisputable that our biosphere also forms an infosphere:- a network of networks crisscrossed by an infinity of material, signs, codes and languages. So much so that the environment in which we live, without ceasing to be what it was, has already been altered: the revolution in microelectronics has transformed the whole range of social practices. It has changed our way of conceiving, perceiving and relating to the world that surrounds us.
